AMD Treatment Dubai

Any condition related to the eye can be a cause for great concern, regardless of the severity of the problem. There are a few common eye diseases that affect people over the age of fifty-five one of which is macular degeneration. It is sometimes referred to as AMD or Age-related macular degeneration.

AMD is responsible for a third of the world population of blindness, affecting the back area of the eye, the macula which is a part of the retina. This part allows us to see clarity and distinguish between features and details. When this part degenerates, our vision will become blurred and fuzzy. Complete blindness is a very rare occurrence although it is not to be disregarded either.

Macular degeneration can affect one or both eyes at varying speeds. Some individuals will notice a gradual loss in the clarity of their vision over time, and some will notice their quality of vision depreciating much faster than expected. If you have a family history of macular degeneration, it is best to have your eyes tested for the condition regularly at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Centre as regularly as frequently as every two years. Habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption could cause the condition to progress faster and prematurely than expected and it is therefore advised that those with the risk of AMD, avoid these substances.

People who are affected by the condition find it difficult to drive and recognize familiar faces. Detailing might be lost and instead you may see blobs of the object or person rather than a clear image. Depending on the severity of the condition, your eye surgeon will decide on an appropriate treatment plan for you. This may include dietary changes, lifestyle changes, prescription glasses or surgery. Although surgery is usually the last resort as it involves the very delicate section of the eye.

Regular eye exams at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Centre can help you identify the risks factors present and help you decide on early treatment and prevention. An eye exam at the Dubai Eye Clinic by Dr. Hani Sakla, will be a thorough examination to identify a few things pertaining to the health of your eyes and vision. A detailed eye exam will include some of the following:
  • The Dilation test allows your eye specialist to look inside the eye. You will be given an eye drop that will widen the pupil just enough for the doctor to look inside the eye using a special magnifying instrument. This will allow him a clear view of the macula and the optic nerve. Should degeneration be present, it will be obvious with this test.
  • Your visual acuity is measured using a general eye chart. Your vision clarity is measured at various distances allowing the doctor to stipulate the AMD risks that you may have.
  • The last test is where a natural dye is injected into the eye to check if the eye has any damaged blood vessels. The dye usually clears out within a few hours.
  • The Amsler grid is used to track changes present in your central vision.
The health of your macular can be determined with the help of these tests. Early detection of AMD will help you maintain healthy vision in Dubai and possibly prolong the onset of Age-related Macular Degeneration. If you are above the age of fifty-five, or have a family history of AMD, or are a heavy smoker it is best to have the AMD tests done regularly which will help you maintain your vision for longer.

Astigmatism Dubai

Astigmatism is a common eye condition sometimes present at birth and sometimes is a result of injury or other eye diseases. It is a physical disfigurement of the eye’s surface causing blurred vision. The condition is identified by the absence of a smooth curvature of the cornea or lens. The rough surface causes a person’s vision to become distorted and inaccurate.

Valleys and peaks will be present on the cornea or the lens. The unevenness displaces light improperly away from the retina, which causes vision to become distorted and unclear. The condition is not worsened by a person’s life style, and therefore contrary to popular belief, reading into the night or watching a lot of television has no effect on the disease.

Astigmatism causes other symptoms too. Eyestrain, headaches, and bad vision. These symptoms are common with other refractive errors such as near and farsightedness, and hence goes undetected until an optometrist or an ophthalmologist examines the eye. If caught early, mild forms of Astigmatism is corrected with specially made glasses or contact lenses.

There are two types of Astigmatism, one that affects the cornea, and the other that affects the lens of the eye. As it would be understood, it is easier to treat corneal astigmatism than it is to treat Lenticular Astigmatism with external corrective measures. LASIK surgery Dubai, would be more suited for treating the latter.

The eyes are meant to have smooth perfectly rounded surfaces without abnormal shapes or structures to refract light on to the retina properly. Light beams reaching elsewhere is not detected by the optic nerve. When the cornea or lens presents steeper ridges and low-lying valleys, similar to what a scoop of ice cream looks like, it will distort a person’s vision immensely.

Rigid contact lenses are more effective in treating corneal astigmatism, as they are hard and force the imperfections into a smooth curved shape. Prescription glasses counteract blurred vision, and a combination of glasses and rigid contact lenses, will see the condition improve. Astigmatism is a physical disfigurement of the eye and therefore corrective eye surgery is able to give immediate results to patients.

Astigmatism is diagnosed by an eye doctor using a Kerotoscope; a device that measures the orientation of the refracted light. Once the diagnosis is complete, it will be up to the patient to decide the preferred method of treatment based on the Doctors advice.

Ebsaar provides all types of treatment for this common eye condition from corrective glasses, contact lenses, and LASIK Surgery in Dubai. If astigmatism causes severe blurred or distorted vision hampering normal daily activities even with glasses, LASIK surgery is able to remove the disfigurements present on the cornea and lens, reversing refractive error. LASIK surgery is now considered one of the most trusted and safe eye treatment options for various visual conditions.

What is an Eye exam in Dubai?

An eye exam is full evaluation of your vision and eyes. It is different from seeing an optician who will only check your visual acuity. A full eye exam is done by either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, using numerous techniques and devices to determine the health of both your eyes.

The eyes are of paramount importance to live a carefree life, but they are also easily affected by internal and external factors. Diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of glaucoma or age related macular degeneration, and your lifestyle determines the health of your eyes and vision.

It is important that you see your ophthalmologist, or optometrist regularly to detect and avoid serious conditions related to the eye. For young children, its best to have them tested at least twice before they turn six: once at the age of two and then again before they attend grade one. Teenagers will need to get an eye exam in Dubai once every two years, and adults every four or five years. People over the age of 60 should have a yearly exam as they are prone to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.

Regular eye exams helps diagnose conditions early, and may even help you avoid complicated surgery later on.

A general eye exam will check eyesight, peripheral vision, colour blindness, examine the structure of the eye for any abnormalities, and for any sign of retinal disorders, AMD, cataracts, and glaucoma.

A paediatrician will check the vision of infants and toddlers and look for common problems like lazy eye, crossed eyes, and squints. It is advised to do a follow up examination by the time he or she reaches five years of age. Children are prone to depreciating eyesight, especially if they are constantly on the computer, playing video games and watching TV. Furthermore, most children are not fond of fruits and vegetables, which contain most or all the nutrients needed for good vision.

Teenagers who use laptops and computers, play video games, or play outdoors in the sun without protective eyewear are exposed to ultra violet radiation, which damages the eye significantly over time. It is good practice to check the eyes of teenagers more frequently like once every two years.

Whether you wear prescription glasses or not, adults should have their eyes checked every four or five years. Conditions like high blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol affect the health of your eyes and should any of these conditions be present, your eyes must be checked more often.

Your eye exam will consist of different stages where your vision, colour vision, outer surface, and inner structures are systematically checked for any abnormalities. Each eye is checked individually and your Dubai eye doctor discusses the results with you in detail. Should you require treatment or need preventive care to avoid problems, you eye doctor will relate the options available to you.

If you were contact lenses or prescription glasses, bring them along to your appointment, as your doctor will confirm their correct prescription.

Eye Doctor in Dubai

Some people experience corneal erosion of the eye. This mostly occurs in the mornings when the eye lids become stuck to the top most layer of the eye, called the epithelial layer. The epithelial layer loses its grip on the cornea due to eye injury, unhygienic contact lenses, eye ulcers, and eye diseases, such as corneal dystrophy.

Anybody can suffer from this condition as it is connected to other diseases and people who use contact lenses regularly are especially prone to this condition. Wearing contact lenses for long periods of time, not using the proper cleansing liquid and wearing them the wrong way, can cause corneal erosion. Corneal erosion is also a symptom of herpes and occurs after ulcers in the eye. All these conditions leads to the dryness, and then excessive tearing, which causes the epithelial cells to become fused to the eyelids during the night, when the eyes remain closed for long hours. Opening the eyes in the morning will be slightly painful causing a stinging sensation. The pain comes from the epithelial layer tearing off. The phenomenon is similar to removing temporary sticker tattoos off the skin.

The slight stinging may last for a few hours in the morning along with excessive tearing, As the protective sheet becomes dislodged, the patient will feel a constant presence of a foreign particle in the eye. If the symptoms are experienced daily, coupled with redness, excessive tearing, dry eyes, you may be experience the condition of corneal erosion.

Diagnosis

Corneal erosion is diagnosed simply by shining a bright sheet light on to the front of the eye. If corneal erosion is present the tears will be visible to your Dubai Ophthalmologist. Some eye doctors will introduce a fluorescein stain, which is a yellow coloured harmless liquid that highlights any defects on the surface of the eye. If indeed the epithelial layer is damaged it will be easily noticeable to your eye doctor in Dubai.

Treatment

There are two types of treatment levels for corneal erosion; non-invasive medications and surgery. Symptoms are most prevalent in the morning, and therefore your doctor will first prescribe hydrating eye drops to be used during the night. This will treat only mild cases of the condition. If the problem persists, it is referred to as recurrent corneal erosion. Artificial tears will prevent your eyelids from sticking to the surface of the eyeball. Some patients will use this during the day as well if the conditions are severe. Protective contact lenses are prescribed as eye bandages, which will keep the epithelial in place. Eye patches are used to prevent infection.

If artificial teardrops, eye patches and the contact lenses do not work, your ophthalmologist will recommend surgery, which entails light scarring of the epithelial layer with a fine needle. The minute cuts are done at the bottom of the eyeball forming scar tissue. The scar tissue acts as an abrasive that holds the epithelial layer in place.

Ebsaar Eye Surgery Centre is a medical centre that specializes in diagnostics and treatment of problems relating to the eye. Everybody does experience some amount of epithelial tears, but it not noticeable and generally only occurs with dead epithelial cells that naturally fall off and cling to the surface of the eye. However if the problem persists, causing pain or a stinging sensation on consecutive mornings, it is advised that you make an appointment with a specialist Dubai eye doctor at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center. Early detection and cure will help you avoid more serious treatment like surgery.

10 reasons to see an Eye Doctor

Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center, a specialized Dubai eye clinic with a team of experienced eye surgeons and ophthalmologists led by Dr. Hani Sakla. All our doctors are certified with years of experience and are dedicated to promoting healthy vision in Dubai. Ebsaar’s team of Cataract specialists and Lasik eye Surgeons Dubai, have many years of specialized experience in treating patients with visual difficulties.

The eyes are sensitive organs that guide you through your day. Many people, wear prescription eyeglasses, from as early as age three. Diminishing eyesight is a common problem faced by many in recent times due to daily exposure to UV Radiation, bad nutritional habits, alcohol consumption, and smoking.

10 reasons to see an eye doctor

Blurry vision

Blurry vision is sign that your eyes are having difficulty focusing on objects correctly. When your eyes are weak, they lose the ability to properly view objects. If you experience blurry vision, and it is not related to any other physical ailment like low sugar, pressure problems and lack of nutrients, you are advised to seek medical attention immediately, so an eye doctor can diagnose and treat the problem in its early stages.

Air Floaters

We have all experienced this at one point or the other in our lives, usually occurring when we’ve bumped our head, close and open eyes to quickly or move between two different light intensities. If you experience persistent floaters regularly and are unable to solve the problem with a few blinks, it’s a sign to see your optometrist.

Headaches

Low vision is sometimes responsible for headaches. You will notice the headache apparent behind the eyes near the forehead. People report having these headaches, when reading or working on a computer. Straining, weakens the eyes and you will need to seek advice to have it resolved as pain medication will only temporarily reduce the ache, but cure the problem.

Difficulty Reading

People automatically know the distance they need to keep, between the eyes and reading matter. Weak vision will prompt you to change your reading distance by adjusting the length between the eyes and what you read. Speak to your family eye doctor who will check your eyes and prescribe eyeglasses to help reverse the problem.

Distance Misjudgement

Your eyes help you judge distances between your car and another, in activities like playing pool, walking to a store etc. Misjudging the distance distance is a symptom of bad vision that needs correction by an eye doctor urgently.

Premature Eye Tiredness

Your eyes are generally the last to get tired. Your brain and eyes function on one clock, and unless you are physically tired and have had a very long day, your eyes should keep up. If your eyes tire more quickly, they should be examined.

Delayed Accommodation

Your lens muscles are constantly working together to allow just the right amount of light through. This happens when moving from dark light to bright lighting and vice versa. It takes a fraction of a second. If it takes longer and it affects you while driving, there are treatment options that will help your eyes accommodate to different lighting effectively.

Constant Tears

Excessive tears throughout the day mean your eyes are either infected or has a disease. Tears are your eyes defence mechanism against foreign particles, if they are shed excessively, they are literally crying out for help.
Not seen your eye doctor in two years

Your eyes require the same amount of care and treatment as the rest of your body. If you have not seen a qualified optometrist in a long time, may be its time you do.

Healthy Vision Dubai

Sunglasses are more than just a fashion accessory and wearing the right pair is important in the prevention of many eye diseases. Many people confuse sunglasses as fashion accessories and therefore, buy them based on the fashion statement they make. It is important to understand the protective feature of the pair you buy, and know how effective a pair of sunglasses can be in prolonging good eyesight until old age.

Sunglasses protect your eyes from receiving harmful Ultraviolet Radiation

Ultraviolet radiation is a negative catalyst in the development of premature visual problems which includes age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. In addition, the skin around the eye is the thinnest and prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays, can cause premature aging. UV rays have been known to age the skin around the eyes, causing wrinkles and fine lines. It is important to buy a good medically approved pair of sunglasses to prevent the onset of these diseases and aging signs. A high quality pair of sunglasses will block 100% of UV rays from coming in contact with your eyes and the skin around it.

Wearing sunglasses reduces glare

Most surfaces reflect and amplify light. Roads surfaces, water, snow, glass buildings, and sand all reflect light back creating a glare. This is especially dangerous while driving or if you’re involved in any type of sporting activities. Polarized sunglasses protect your vision from being distorted; preventing extreme glare. There are many fake sunglasses that claim to be polarized and it important to ensure a good high polarized pair of sunglasses is used for these activities.

Sunglasses reduce headaches caused by fatigued eye muscles

The pupil of the eye dilates and constricts to allow just the right amount of light to the retina. In extremely bright conditions, the pupil will find it difficult to constrict further to prevent bright light from entering the eye. This will force the person to squint, which means your eyelids too will start to close up, further reducing light intensity. The eyelids and pupils are both controlled by tiny muscles in the eye, which show signs of strain when overworked for long periods. This inevitably leads to eye straining and headaches. Sunglasses are designed differently for different purposes, and therefore you need to use the correct pair depending on the time of day and environment.

Prolonged Healthy Vision

Wearing the correct pair of sunglasses is important in maintaining good eyesight for as long as possible. You will need different pairs depending on the varying activities and environments you are exposed to. You may need to have different pairs, made specifically for each activity or sport. The right pair of sunglasses or protective glasses while working on the computer is also necessary to prevent future visual problems and eye diseases.

If you would like to know more about buying the correct pair of sunglasses talk to your doctor at the Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center and we will be happy to give you any advice you need.

What does Crossed Eyes or Lazy Eye mean?

When one eye focuses on a different spot than the other, it is called the lazy eye or a squint. Strabismus is the scientific term for eye turn, which has two variations; if the eye turns outwards away from the nose, the condition is referred to as exotropia, and inwards is called esotropia, if one of the eyes turns upwards, the condition is called hypertropia.

The squint eye condition may be constant or occasional. The misalignment of the eyes causes the person to either experience double vision, where both eyes transmit two separate images to the brain; person has trouble with depth perception, or is unable to see objects in 3D; and the person develops abnormal binocular vision. For constant eye turn, glasses with different prescription are worn, one for closer vision and the other further away. Usually, one eye will be able to see objects clearly, and with one or two dimension, where the other struggles and sees blurred objects. If this happens, the eye with the blurred vision will prevent it from developing normally, turning it into the lazy eye, or Amblyopia.

For normal vision to develop both eyes are meant to focus on the same image equally. The brain requires both signals from each eye to be identical in order to create an image. If one of the images received is blurred, or misaligned due to astigmatism or strabismus, the brain works to shut one eye’s function down, as it finds it difficult to workout depth and shape. The good eye is therefore preferred by the brain, which will use it all the time, ignoring the weak or affected one. This will cause one eye to be strong and the other to weaken as time goes on. Glasses are worn from early age, to prevent or slow the progress of the lazy eye, as it will be some time, before the brain does write off the affected eye. However, the eye causing blurred or misaligned vision will not have its vision restored to 20/20. The first step to treatment is to correct the alignment of both eyes, so they work together. Correcting blurred vision will be the second step after strabismus has been cured. Once your child has obtained their new prescription glasses to correct alignment issues, the visual acuity should be checked at home or in the office.

It is most affective to treat strabismus and amblyopia as early as possible to have the highest chances of reversing or preventing eye turn. However, we have been able to correct amblyopia and strabismus in older children and adults. Surgery is an option for treatment of severe strabismus and amblyopia, and mechanical alignment is not necessary early on. Treatment includes exercises, eye patches used to cover the good eye, forcing the affected eye to work properly, eye glasses and regular prescription changes, and other types of visual therapy which helps by exercising the muscles, works the lenses, and nerves in the eyes. Therapy to fix blurred or misalignment of the eye includes reeducating the eyes to function properly. Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center Vision Correction Solutions, founded and lead by Internationally Acclaimed eye surgeon Dr. Hani Sakla has seen many young and older patients with visual problems and pertaining to strabismus and amblyopia. With over 30 years of global experience as eye specialists, Dr. Sakla and his team, is able to offer you the best eye care in Dubai

Dry Eyes Dubai

Dry eyes are a result of inadequate tears to moisturize the eyes and protect them from dust and foreign particles. There are many reasons for inadequate tears, this could be because your tears are thick in consistency or is insufficient. Most people blink every few seconds and this helps wash away dust and moisturizes the area. Dry eyes symptoms are itchiness, redness, soreness when closing, and opening the eyelids and individuals who suffer from dry eyes have a constant need to rub them to remove foreign particles.

Dry eyes cause constant irritation and a stinging burn in the eyes. Most people experience dry eyes while in airplanes, riding a bike or cycling, or by being in an air-conditioned room for long durations, where the tears in your eyes dry off due to friction or cold air. Situational dry eyes are temporary and last only as long as your eyes are subject to those conditions. Most people wear protective eyewear to prevent the onset of dry eyes in these situations. Eye drops that act as false tears helps reduce the irritation caused due to cold air, riding a bike, and air travel. However, if your eyes feel dry for most parts of the day, depending on the cause of the symptoms, your doctor will suggest the appropriate treatment. Your ophthalmologist will first ask you to make lifestyle and diet changes along with prescribed eye drops and medication. If these treatment options do not resolve or reduce the symptoms, surgery may be considered for severe cases.

Symptoms of dryness in both eyes:
  • Burning or stinging sensation in both eyes, which cause you to rub them often
  • Tears are of a thick consistency, causing itchiness
  • Harsh wind speeds cause severe stinging and burning especially while riding a bicycle or motorbike without protective eye gear
  • Constant need to wash eyes due to fatigue and redness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Dried up tears and mucus blobs found on the surface of the eye
  • Unable to wear contact lenses
  • Excessive tearing caused by irritation
  • Vision becomes blurred and distorted
You will need to visit your Dubai eye doctor, when these symptoms prolong for long durations causing difficulty in your normal routines.

Dry eyes are a result of two main reasons: Inadequate production of tears to lubricate the eyelid while it blinks or the wrong tear composition. Tears are made up fatty oils, water, and mucus, which combine perfectly to keep your eyes clean and smooth. If the ratios of the compositions are not balanced, a person may suffer from dry eyes. External factors like the environment, medication, and eye surgery also cause symptoms of dry eyes.

If left untreated, dry eyes may cause mild or severe infection and swelling of the eyelids. Scars and redness may become permanent and you may suffer visual difficulties later on in life.

Should you experience dry eyes for prolonged periods, make an appointment with Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center and have your dry eyes treated medically. Your ophthalmologist will need a lifestyle medical history to determine the exact cause of your eye and it may help to have the following listed down before your appointment with our Dubai eye doctors.
  • List of medications taken within the last month
  • Types of food enjoyed daily and specially anything you may have had that is not normally included in your diet.
  • Lifestyle changes – This might be an insignificant change
Once you have these listed down, it will be easier for your doctor to establish the cause of your dry eye and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan for the symptoms.

Conjunctivitis Dubai

A common problem with the eyes is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a thin transparent covering on the inside surface of the eyelid. Conjunctivitis is common amongst many individuals and is usually seen as a pinkish effect around the eyelids and can spread to many individuals in the same vicinity. Conjunctivitis is common in schools and offices, where individuals remain in closed spaces for long durations.

Conjunctivitis is not a serious, however if left untreated develops into serious visual problems. Conjunctivitis is a bacterial, viral, or chemical infection that affects the eye, either airborne or caused through chemical pollutants in the air. Bad eye makeup with chemical irritants is also sometimes responsible for conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is sometimes a symptom of sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Always consult your Dubai Eye Doctor for any type of eye infection to ensure your eyes are safe from danger.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
  • Itchy warm sensation in one or both eyes
  • Swelling on the eyelids
  • White discharge from one or both eyes with excessive tearing
  • Redness in the infected eye
  • Irritability to light
What are the causes of conjunctivitis?

There are a few reasons that could cause conjunctivitis in the eye. This could be due to seasonal allergies, infectious or chemically induced redness in the eye.

Conjunctivitis caused by Allergies

Conjunctivitis brought on by allergies is common among people living near farms and fields where the air contains dust and pores. Giant papillary conjunctivitis is another form of allergic conjunctivitis in which a large particle finds its way into the eye causing irritability and redness. This happens mainly to people who touch or rub their eyes often or wear contact lenses for a long time.

Conjunctivitis caused by infections

There are three types of infectious conjunctivitis:

Bacterial conjunctivitis caused by two types of bacteria streptococcal and staphylococcal. These two types of bacteria are found on the skin and respiratory systems of humans. It is therefore, easily transmitted through physical contact or air. Infectious conjunctivitis easily spreads among individuals in closed spaces or when in contact with an already infected person. You can be infected with Bacterial conjunctivitis by using contaminated make-up and eyewear.

Viral Conjunctivitis is associated with the common cold and could be a symptom of the flu. Viral infections of the lungs contaminates your respiratory tract, nose and eventually the connected tear ducts and throat. Viral conjunctivitis is a airborne disease as well.

Ophthalmia Neonatorum is a bacterial conjunctivitis that affects newborn babies. Newborns are at risk of contracting a bacterial infection when passing through a birth canal affected by Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. This type of infection is immediately treated to prevent serious visual problems in the future.

Chemical Conjunctivitis

Chemical Conjunctivitis is caused by chemical pollutants in the air, a type of redness and swelling can occur in the eye. High concentrations of chlorine, or chemical sprays like hair sprays and insect spray can seriously harm your eyes.

How is conjunctivitis treated?

Each strain of conjunctivitis is treated differently and your doctor at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center – vision correction solutions will examine the cause of your conjunctivitis before administering the right course of medication.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis – Conjunctivitis caused be allergies is better prevented, as it is best to avoid the irritant or wear protective glasses during seasonal changes. Cool compresses will bring the swelling down. Artificial teardrops will relieve mild discomfort. For severe cases, antihistamine or anti-inflammatory medication, is prescribed by your eye doctor in Dubai. Steroid eye drops is prescribed, for severe persistent cases.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis – Antibiotic eye drops are available to treat bacterial infections and will generally take a few days to show results when the course is completed.
  • Viral Conjunctivitis – viral infections will need to run its course as antibiotic drops or ointment does not cure this type of conjunctivitis. Symptoms may be reduced with the use of cool compresses, and tear drops. For severe pain or inflammation, a steroid eye drop will be prescribed. Some doctors treat eye infections with an iodine eyewash; the effectiveness of which is still not known.
  • Chemical Conjunctivitis – When your eyes come in contact with chemicals, it is important to flush it out completely with cold water for many minutes. If the problem persists or severe pain is felt, visit an emergency room for immediate treatment. If left untreated, chemical conjunctivitis may cause partial or complete blindness. Visit an eye clinic Dubai to ensure that an ophthalmologist can look at it to prevent future visual problems.

Stargardt’s Disease

Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center is a specialized eye clinic in Dubai that sees patients with visual difficulties and diseases. Our eye clinic is always at the forefront of technology and research to ensure that all our visiting patients get the best eye care treatment available in Dubai. We treat many diseases related to the eyes like Cataracts, Glaucoma and see patients with low vision quality. We specialize in Lasik treatment as well as Keratoconus.

Stargardt’s disease, similar to Macular Degeneration, but is diagnosed in young children and adults as an inherited disease.

Stargardt’s disease scientifically referred to as fundus flavimaculatus or Stargardt’s Macular dystrophy (SMD). This affects approximately one in 10,000 individuals, defined by the loss of central vision early life not caused by external factors like the environment or nutrition.

The retina contains light sensitive cells rods and cones. Cones cells are sensitive to colour and are more concentrated in the center of the retina. This area of the retina also called the yellow spot. The rods, which are cells sensitive to black and white colour are in the peripheral region of the yellow spot and is responsible for black and white vision.

The retina is protected by a thin yellow covering of epithelial cells, made up of vitamin A. The outer skin of the retina, acts as natural sunglasses protecting the inner eye from harsh UV damage. Stargardt’s disease is when these epithelial cells degenerate and clump together forming dark yellow spots preventing light from reaching the retina. Usually the disease begins in the center of the retina, which is why it affects the central vision first. Gradually, the disease spread to the rest of the retina causing semi blindness and eventually complete blindness.

Studies suggest aggregation or “clumping” of vitamin A in the retina may be associated both with Stargardt’s disease and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These clumpy deposits are known as “vitamin A dimmers”.

Causes of Stargardt’s Disease

Stargardt’s disease is a hereditary disease that does not have a medical cure as yet The disease is transferred to children when both parents suffer from Stargardt’s Disease. Studies have revealed that the disease is caused by a mutation of a gene that is responsible for processing vitamin A in the eye. However, parents who are only carriers of the recessive gene also transfer this disease to the children.

How fast does Stargardt’s disease progress?

The progression of Stargardt’s disease differs from person to person and vision problems can begin in early childhood to late teens. However, in some cases the onset of the disease does not begin until mid adulthood. As Stargardt’s disease is the degeneration of light sensitive cells, some studies show that by protecting your eyes with proper prescription glasses or wearing medically prescribed sunglasses reduces the progress of this disease.

What are the treatments for Stargardt’s disease?

There are no known treatments so far for Stargardt’s disease. However, initial stem cell research has shown 100% improvement in rats that have a similar type disease. Phase 1 and 2 of the clinical trials began in 2011 and scientists are hopeful that a cure will be found to counteract the onset of Stargardt’s Disease.

Good Nutrition for the Eyes

When we talk about our health in Dubai, we concern ourselves with good nutrition for the body, but pay minimum attention to the health of the eyes. We must understand, that although, the heart, brain and bones is what does keep up well, our main objective to remain healthy is to enjoy life and not become the responsibility of other people, prematurely. Having healthy vision fits into this objective more prominently than we realize.

The eyes like all the other parts of the body, has its own requirements for good nutrition and exercise.

Here are the most important nutrients and minerals that your eyes require for great vision throughout your life.

Chromium – contributes to controlling intraocular pressure when focusing on near or far objects. The muscles used the most are those in the eye, and chromium helps with muscular contraction in the eye. Good sources of Chromium are greens like spinach, peppers and green apples, meat and eggs, and especially seafood like oysters.

Vitamin C – we cannot stress any further importance on the value of vitamin c on the correlation between the prevention of many visual diseases and illness like Cataract, and reduces intraocular pressure in Glaucoma patients. Even though, we are naturally inclined to think that only citric fruits and juices are good sources of vitamins C, you would be surprised to know that green vegetables like Broccoli, parleys, collards and chili pepper are richer in vitamin C than citric fruits.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin – types of carotenoids help protect the retina of the eye, responsible for distinguishing colours. These two nutrients, act like natural sunglasses that protects the inner eyes from severe UV radiation. Lutein and Zeaxanthin, which helps form a yellow covering over the retina, and are found in similar color, yellow peppers, pumpkin, corn, carrots, and yellow tomatoes. Other rich sources are fruits like papaya, mangos, and oranges.

Zinc – helps convert beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is an important nutrient that helps to maintain good vision. The highest level of zinc is found in the eyes of the human body and constant replenishment can be achieved by eating foods like oysters or oyster sauce and spinach. Artificial sources like good multivitamins should contain high amounts of zinc sufficient for the eye.

Selenium - an anti-oxidant that helps in the prevention of cataracts and macular degeneration by neutralizing free radicals in the eye. Selenium found in the same foods as chromium and additionally in foods like garlic, fish, and brewer’s yeast.

Glutathione – a type of amino acid linked to the prevention of retinal disease, glaucoma, cataracts, and blindness due to diabetes. Foods rich in glutathione are sulfur-based foods such as asparagus, onions and garlic and fruits like watermelon and grapefruits.

Ginkgo – another powerful anti-oxidant is one of the oldest species of trees in the world that has existed for over 150 million years. It helps in maintaining healthy retinas if taken throughout your lifetime.

What is Cataract Treatment?

Cataract is the world’s leading cause of blindness in people above the age of 50, although it is also seen in children mainly due to the intake of prescription medicine and hereditary circumstances. Cataract affects the lens in the eyes and most often than not, both eyes are affected at the same time. Cataract affects 18 million people worldwide but its effects can be delayed with proper eye treatment and if blindness occurs Cataract Treatment is available at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center.
Cataract is the name of the disease that happens in the lens of the eye. The lens is made up of protiens and water. The lens is a clear part of the eye. As we age the protiens in the lens separates from the water and collects in sections distorting or blocking light and images from falling on the retina (the back part of the eye that transmits signals to the brain using the optic nerve).
Although Cataract is diagnosed mostly in the older population, it not uncommon amongst young children and babies.
* Age-related cataracts ? As people age, the lens in the eyes loses it strength and eventually a build up of protein clouds your vision.
* Congenital cataracts ? seen in babies and young children is a result of poor development, injury and infection before or after birth.
* Secondary cataracts ? is a symptom of other ailments like diabetes or the exposure or consumption to radiation, ultra violet light, harmful or toxic substances or is the side effect of prescription medication such as corticosteroids (steroids prescribed for inflammation, digestive problems and hormone replacement) or Diuretics (pills prescribed for high blood pressure)
* Traumatic cataracts ? as the name suggests is caused after direct injury to the eye.
There are three type of cataracts diagnosed in patients.
* Cortical Cataract affecting the outer part of the lens and gradually moving towards the center.
* Nuclear Cataract which begins in the center nucleus of the lens. When new cells form on the outter surface of the lens, the older ones are pushed to the centre which becomes the nucleus. In this type of cataract, the old cells are not able to retain their form, and hence the water and the protien separate.
* Subcapsular Cataracts is caused mainly by prescription medication and occurs at the back of the lens. Diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and hormorne replacement medical are all causes of this type of cataracts.
Prevention methods have not been fully understood yet, and as 18 million people are affected from cataract around the world, some scientific research claims that certain foods have either a positive or a negative effect on the disease. In one research it has been found that meat-eaters were more at risk of getting Cataract than people who included more fish and vegetables in their diet. Anti-Oxidents, certain vitamins like A, C, and E, zinc and regular eye exercise have been tested as preventive steps to delaying the onset of Cataracts.
There are some concerns when it come to patients who have previously had LASIK surgery done and require Cataract surgery as they age. These concerns are addressed by providing your Ophthalmologist, with all the information of your visual health prior to and after the LASIK surgery was done. The Ophthalmologist will evaluate each case individually and advise accordingly.

Refractive Errors in Dubai

Refractive errors in Dubai and in anywhere else in the world are generally categorized in to two section; high and low. High refractive errors generally result in the patient having blurry and inaccurate vision to an extent that the eye cannot correct this predicament and focus on an object accurately on its own. Low refractive errors have a possibility to be corrected on its own but could lead to muscular and nerve exhaustion because the eye has to make extra effort to focus on an object accurately. Such errors also tend to be harder to spot in comparison with high refractive errors in Dubai.

A predominant symptom of having high refractive errors in Dubai is that those affected have decreased visual focus and tend to be clumsier in comparison with others. When it comes to children, observation has proven to show that those affected with refractive errors in Dubai seem to be less intelligent, less inclined to interact with others, participate in sporting activities and are even clumsier than others and have experienced drastic improvement in learning and coordination once the problem has been paid attention to and fixed by a good eye doctor in Dubai

Falling asleep with your contact lenses on should be especially avoided because contacts tend to block off the regular supply of oxygen in to your eyes and more so when they are closed. Wearing any form of corrective eye wear when in the water too is not recommended unless protective goggles are worn at all times in order to ensure that your eyes are in good shape.

Go out in the sun often? If you do then you can’t go wrong with switching your fashionable shades to even more fashionable polarized lenses that have UV protective measures on them so that your eyes are not exposed to the harmful effects of the light. In today’s day an age we spend most of our time in front of a computer no matter if we are working or relaxing. So take the time to blink every 30 seconds or so when you’re in front of a screen in order to avoid dry eyes. Keratoconus Treatment Dubai

Keratoconus occurs when the cornea of the eye assumes an abnormal cone shaped protrusion that defers according to degree based on the thickness of the cornea along with the vision of the patient. There are extremely minute fibers present in our eyes called collagen and they help hold the cornea in place and keep it from bulging abnormally. The weakening of these fibers results in the cone shaped protrusion referred to as Keratoconus by eye specialists in Dubai and around the world. The best possible explanation for this eye disease is that the condition seems to be genetically carried. There is also some evidence that points towards constant and chronic eye rubbing causing the disease. In most cases though, Keratoconus in Dubai cannot be related to any eye injury or ailment or trauma as an explanation for its occurrence.

Keratoconus is known to manifest more commonly during the affected individuals teenage years even though it is possible for those of other ages to develop it as well though it is less common. The changes in the shape of cornea too can happen drastically or over time depending on the individual’s condition. Keratoconus in Dubai therefore has proven to result in blurred vision, glares, halos and streaks of light in vision when affected. One may develop this eye disease in one eye and then move on to the next in a period of time.

Some treatment methods available for Keratoconus are Epikeratophakia; a procedure which consists of using a piece of donated corneal tissue to repair the eye or in some early cases; the corneal cross linking with UV lights in order to stabilize the condition. Topographically guided laser treatments are also used along with the implantation of contact lenses. In very advanced cases; a lamellar corneal graft or penetrating the corneal graft might be required in order to treat this condition.

This eye impairment in Dubai can make it virtually impossible for the eye to focus without the use of visual aids such as contacts or eye glasses. This being said it is extremely dangerous for those with this condition to opt for treatment methods such as Lasik surgery so avoiding this at all costs is absolutely recommended by the experts at Ebsaar Dubai for their betterment and wellbeing.

Ebsaar Dubai is a renowned surgical clinic that is known for being informative about their treatments and caring about their patient’s wellbeing over profitability. Entrusting your eyes with them can therefore only benefit you no matter what the required process might be in order to outfit your eyes with the best possible remedy.

Glaucoma in Dubai

Glaucoma occurs in the eye as a result of increased pressure in the eye which causes damage in the optic nerve. At Ebsaar Dubai we put our specialized focus on not only superior treatment methods but also by educating our patients on how to prevent progressive ailments such as glaucoma which comes in 4 different types; the most widespread being chronic glaucoma. Another variation of the disease is called acute glaucoma and this is extremely dangerous because it occurs suddenly and can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve which in turn can cause blindness. Other eye conditions can also cause secondary glaucoma while congenital glaucoma occurs mostly in babies and is due to malformation of the eye.

Even though prevention is said to be better than the cure with glaucoma early detection too can halt the progression of the disease effectively and immediately if you know how to go about seeking precautionary measures for the betterment of your sight. Glaucoma checkups Dubai is recommended to be done every two to four years before the age of 40 and every six to twelve months after the age of 65. Annual checkups in between are also recommended especially if you are an individual with diabetes, of African decent or if it runs in the family because this is also a genetically transferred disease.

Being affected by Glaucoma in Dubai would mean that you are now susceptible to blindness or significant vision loss. Why suffer all this if it can be easily prevented by a few precautionary measures through early detection? Glaucoma medication that can be prescribed in the early stages of the disease is designed to slow the progression of Glaucoma in Dubai through the reduction of intraocular pressure which halts damage to the optic nerve. Surgery is also an option for more severe cases.

Some daily healthy routines can also halt the progression of Glaucoma and you can couple them with your Glaucoma checkups Dubai in order to derive optimal results. Moderate exercise is known to not only benefit overall health but also reduce intraocular pressure which in turn prevents glaucoma from progressing further. Wearing protective eyewear is also another practice that can be inculcated when outdoors and even when at home to minimize unnecessary eye exposure to bright light or dust.

We at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center Dubai believe that protecting your eyes from anything detrimental is yet another method in which you can actively prevent the progression of glaucoma so make sure that you understand and acknowledge the importance of your sight and incorporate these practices in to your lifestyle so that you can live a happy life, uninterrupted by any eye ailment that can lead to the loss of your much needed vision.

Dry Eyes Dubai

Knowing your eyes is crucial to having healthy eyes in Dubai today. Your eyes are dependent on tears for constant lubrication in order to maintain visual comfort and eyeball flexibility. Tears consist of a solution of water, oils, mucus, antibodies and special proteins to resist infection and keep your eyes in good condition. If there is an imbalance in any one of the above mentioned components you may experience dry eyes and irritation. Some irritations that are caused due to dry eyes are; pain, a rough sensation, itchiness, redness, blurred vision and light sensitivity. Having dry eyes in Dubai does not necessarily mean that your eyes are completely dry and devoid of tears. Some individuals with dry eye syndrome may have excess tears running down their faces due to the eye lacking in sufficient lubrication in order to function to its full capacity.

The main cause and reason for dry eyes in Dubai are old age, menopause, side effects of drugs such as birth control pills, certain diseases and structural problems of the eyelids that don’t allow the eyes to close completely. It is important for those experiencing dry eye syndrome to know that there is no conclusive cure for this ailment through there are many treatment procedures that can be recommended to you by expert eye care specialists such as those who reside in the Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center Dubai.

The Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center Dubai is renowned for their novel and technical eye care solutions that are superior to most based on exceptionally new technology and incomparable service provided by those employed in the center. Some treatments offered for dry eyes in Dubai are; artificial tear drops and ointments, temporary or permanent punctual occlusions in order to provide an adequate supply of tears, Restasis which is the only FDA approved eye drop available for the condition, medications and of course surgery if required. This surgery once completed succeeds in closing off the tear ducts that drain tears in to the nose to make sure that more tears remain in and around the eye. The good thing about this procedure is that it may be done on an outpatient basis and under local anesthetic with no other hassle.

Sometimes dry eyes may be caused due to something that occurs in your day to day life such as the wearing of contact lenses. If so you may want to switch contact lenses or do away with it all together to ensure that your eyes are protected by any detrimental causes. If you are an individual with dry eyes it also additionally important that you excise caution when opting for surgical procedures such as Lasik surgery because it results in poor healing after the procedure which leaves your precious eyes at risk. So don’t hesitate to put your faith in us at the Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center Dubai and enjoy the benefits of having healthy eyes in Dubai with minimum hassle.

Lasik Dubai

Visual impairment is a major problem not only in Dubai but throughout the world. Lasik treatment Dubai is an extremely trendy and novel solution for such issues due to it being an extremely convenient and easy-to-do procedure. If you are an individual that requires a visual aid of any form then you know how inconvenient such tools can be. For example wearing spectacles not only hinder your appearance but is also a hassle when it comes to always keeping track of where they are and you’d be familiar of how annoying this is if you happen to be as clumsy as I am! Spectacles can also limit your visual ability when it comes to playing certain sports as well. The same rules apply for contact lenses as well. Not only are they uncomfortable and cause irritation; but imagine your plight if one just happens to fall out of your eye? All I can say is, good luck looking for that!

Lasik treatment Dubai or laser eye surgery is a procedure in which an ophthalmologist utilizes a laser in order to revamp visual impairments among individuals. Lasik, short for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is one of the trendiest types of laser eye surgery. Many individuals tend to mistake all types of eye surgery for Lasik surgery due to the term’s popularity. So what’s important for you to know is that Lasik treatment Dubai is effectively put to use in order to repair all three types of visual impairments by cutting a flap off part of the cornea and then replacing it. This procedure is completed with the assistance of a computer-controlled laser that the surgeon uses to guide the process accurately. Lasik has a relatively quick recovery period of approximately one week and is one of the more affordable options that treat visual impairment today.

Although Lasik surgery is an easily available procedure it is our duty to inform you on some pointers as to what you require in order to be a successful candidate for such a procedure. The acceptance of the extremely low possibility of a surgical complication that will permanently affect your eyesight is the first step. Like every surgical procedure there is that small percentage where a complication might occur and you as a voluntary patient must be prepared for this. Also it is important to note that certain career paths do not condone this procedure being done for varying reasons so it’s important to check with them as well. Another crucial factor is that you notice that your visual impairment is stagnant and not healing itself because if it is, like in most cases, undergoing the procedure could be a waste of your valuable time. Therefore it is a good recommendation to make sure that you have a full eye checkup before sitting for any surgical procedure in order to be certain because your eyes are the most important feature in your day to day life and we at Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center Dubai want nothing but the best for you.

There are three types of retinopathy and they are; background retinopathy where there is blood
vessel damage but no vision problems, maculopathy which significantly reduces vision and proliferative retinopathy which is due to the lack of oxygen in the eye caused by new blood vessels growing in the back of the eye.

What Is Keratoconus And How Is It Treated?

Cornea

Cornea is an important part of the eye. Light pass through the cornea to refract the light rays to enable clear vision. Keratoconus Dubai is an uncommon eye disease, which develops in the cornea of the eye. The disease may affect one or both eyes of a person. The disease when affected, leads to difficulty in seeing and eventually distorts images.

Keratoconus

In an eye with Keratoconus, the cornea thins and protrudes into an irregular cone shape. Therefore, the light passing through the cornea distorts by affecting the vision. This progressive disease impacts the normal round cornea to bulge out. Hence, it interferes with daily lifestyles and making it difficult to continue activities such as driving, watching TV and reading.

Diagnosis of Keratoconus

Consulting an Ophthalmologist Dubai will help to diagnose Keratoconus. There are leading eye clinics Dubai that provide extensive diagnosis and treatments for Keratoconus.

• Keratometry is a diagnostic process where a light focuses on the cornea and the reflection is utilised to determine the curve of the cornea.
• Corneal mapping is another diagnosis, which takes a picture of the cornea and generates a topographical map of the eye’s surface.

Causes of Keratoconus

Although the deep root causes of Keratoconus Dubai is unclear, genetics of a person may play a role. Other causes that could lead to a person with Keratoconus eye includes:

• Over exposure to ultraviolet rays
• Excessive eye rubbing
• History of frequent refractive correction changes (poorly fitted eye contacts, eyeglass
corrections)
• Chronic eye irritation
• Imbalance of enzymes within the cornea

Symptoms

Keratoconus Dubai is not associated with acute symptoms or redness. There are various eye clinics Dubai offering professional Keratoconus treatments as the disease may be left undetected for prolong periods. Some of the common symptoms, which may lead to Keratoconus, include:

• With the irregularity in the shape of the cornea, it may cause nearsightedness or
astigmatism
• Sensitivity to light
• Report of multiple images or ghostly images
• Eye strain
• Blurred vision
• Intolerance to glare
• Itching and eye irritation

Treatments

The treatment of Keratoconus depends on the degree of severity. Eye surgery Dubai for Keratoconus treatment has become an option only if other possible treatments fail.

• Custom soft contact lenses – There are specially designed contact lenses, which are based on the detailed measurement of the Keratoconus eye(s). This form of contact lenses is capable of correcting mild to moderate Keratoconus.

• Intacs – A process of placing tiny plastic inserts just under the eye’s surface (periphery of the cornea). These corneal inserts (intacs) helps to re-shape the cornea for clearer visions by flattening the steep cornea.

• Corneal cross-linking – A common treatment in eye clinics Dubai is a procedure that strengthens the corneal tissue to halt the protrusion of the eye’s surface. A successful corneal cross-linking reduces the option of corneal implants. There are two types of cross-linking
o Epithelium-off cross linking is removing the outer portion of the cornea (epithelium) to enter a type of vitamin B (riboflavin) through a UV light
o Epithelium-on cross linking is leaving the cornea intact and offering more time for the riboflavin to permeate into the cornea.
