About Lazy Eyes

The Eye Surgeon in Dubai explains that the most important factor in the care and safeguarding of a child’s eyesight is a thorough eye health examination between the ages of three and four years of age. Most parents don't realize the importance of having an eye exam for children, especially when they are  at such a young age, and they often overlook this. However, there is a good deal of critical information that can be determined, even for babies, with a regular eye exam.
A common condition known as amblyopia or lazy eye is one of the key conditions that can be prevented if its underlying cause can be diagnosed and treated early, in children.
The main cause of amblyopia or lazy eye are,
  • One eye being more farsighted than the other. Children are not aware of this because the more normal of the two eyes will simply take over.
  • One eye having more astigmatism. The good eye takes over in this case also.
  • One eye being turned in or out relative to the straight eye. Parents of the child may often detect crossed or deviated eyes.
A casual eye examination will not be able to detect that something is wrong, especially with the first two scenarios, a thorough examination by an Eye Surgery in Dubai, is the only way a proper diagnosis can be made.
Lazy eyes or amblyopia, and the conditions that leads to it, are one-sided in nature and only one eye at a time gets affected. Those with  amblyopia function well, but their depth perception decreases, and this will restrict their choice of daily activities to a certain extent.  An important factor to keep in mind is that a person with good eyesight in only one eye should always wear impact-resistant eyeglasses to protect the good eye.
You may wonder why it is so important to diagnose the conditions that can lead to amblyopia by age three or four.  The central nervous system can be stimulated and enhanced in children until six to eight years old, therefore their vision can be improved and this is very important for a child’s education and development. Unfortunately, children with lazy eye or amblyopia, are not brought into the Eye Clinic in Dubai until the parent realizes that the child can't see poorly out of one eye. If the child is older than seven or eight, there is little that can be done to improve his or her vision. Studies have shown that children who are successfully treated for eye problems show increased performance in school.
The two-step treatment for amblyopia or lazy eyes is relatively straightforward. First, precision-matched eyeglasses are prescribed to fully correct the vision in each eye. This provides clear, crisp images focused on the retina in the back of the eye. These sharp images are then transmitted to the optic nerve to reach the occipital cortex where special vision cells are sufficiently stimulated so that they can develop to their fullest potential.
The second step in treating amblyopia is to selectively patch the better eye. This forces the weaker eye to be used more and this stimulates the specialized vision cells in the brain to develop properly, thereby allowing good vision development in both eyes.
Special dilating drops are used by the Eye Surgery in UAE, to determine the exact prescription for the child. All patient's with amblyopia is unique, so the duration and outcome of the treatment will vary depending on the visual status of each patient.
Some of the behaviors that might be observed in young children with potential vision problems are, frequent eye rubbing, blinking often, squinting, covering or closing one eye and stumbling over small objects.

Nutrition And Eye Care

The Eye Clinic in Dubai approaches care from a holistic perspective. For instance, patients are often astonished when, as part of our comprehensive yearly exam, at the Clinic the practitioner's check the patient's blood pressure. It gives the Eye Surgeon in Dubai the opportunity to explain that the eyes are attached to the rest of the body and what is often good for a person's overall health is also good for the eyes. Furthermore, by evaluating the small blood vessels in the back of the eyes, doctors can  access the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and other diseases. The advantages of a healthy diet, exercise, and sun protection are discussed as it relates to not only the eyes, but the whole body.
The reason that the Eye Surgery Center in Dubai is so vigilant when it comes to the prevention of  eye disease is since there are many people who fear vision loss and the devastating effect it has on quality of life of many patients. It's amazing to wake up every day, open your eyes, and simply see things, often something most people tend to take for granted. Often times, only once something has been lost do we begin to truly appreciate it. Most eye diseases are painless and gradual, and it’s not until it's too late that patients become aware that something has gone wrong. If people can identify degeneration early on, they can take steps to preserve their vision.
Speaking of preserving one's vision, what steps can be taken to preserve the sight you have, and protect it and enhance it. The risk of common eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye syndrome can be reduced with proper nutrition, explains an Eye Surgery in UAE. Common examples are DHA and EPA, which are Omega 3 fatty acids derived from fish and flax seed. These types of food are not only good for your heart and your mind; they also play a role in reducing the incidence of dry eye, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Also, lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants found in green leafy vegetables, reduce the risk of developing wet macular degeneration. Colorful fruits, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains can reduce the risk of cataracts.
Therefore, make sure to have your fill of nutrients from food whenever possible, like fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables containing lutein and zeaxanthin, are the foundation for healthy eyes. Walnuts, pecans, and almonds contain mostly monounsaturated fats, which lower bad cholesterol and are protein, vitamin, and mineral rich. Look for local, organic foods grown by reputable farms. Avoid processed foods, especially those high in trans-fats. Make sure to check the ratio of omega 6-to omega-3 oils in your diet as some diets contain far too much omega-6. These oils are derived from corn oil, margarine, carbohydrates, and red meat.
While, it may be ideal to get your daily dose of nutrition from food rather than supplements, there have been numerous research articles and evidence that speak of the positive benefits of oral supplements for healthier eyes. At times, due to diet limitations, ingrained habits or reduced nutrient absorption, it makes sense to increase our intake of nutrients with supplements. It is amazing to see the amount of eye vitamins that are available in the market these days and choosing the proper eye vitamins can be equally challenging. Most vitamins for the eyes are prescribed to prevent the advancement of dry macular degeneration to wet macular degeneration, the more aggressive form of the disease.
While supplements are an easy and healthy way to increase nutrient intake, there are precautions that need to be taken. For instance, if you smoke, avoid supplements and multivitamins with beta-carotene as this vitamin can increase the risk of lung cancer. If you take a multivitamin and are considering which eye supplement to take, be aware of this as well as this can cause complications as well.

Keeping A Watchful Eye On Cataracts

A very common condition that affects millions of people nationwide and in Dubai is Cataract, explains an Eye Surgeon Dubai. As  the population continues to age, the numbers keep increasing. Despite these escalating numbers of patients suffering from cataract, it is often manageable and treatable.
Here are some facts that everyone should know so that it can help you recognize Cataracts in Dubai and prevent permanent vision loss.

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye, which restrains the passage of light into the eye and results in blurred or dimmed vision.  The lens is what helps to focus an image onto the retina, which transmits the images to the brain.

Cataracts usually develop as a natural result of the aging process and can occur in one or both eyes. Apart from aging, there are other risk factors for developing cataracts, which include,  long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun, certain health conditions such as diabetes, genetic predisposition, eye injuries, eye inflammation, long-term steroid use, smoking and long term use of other long term medications.

Research shows that cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults who are 55 years and older.  Over half the population above the age 65 has some degree of cataract development. By the time people turn 80years of age,  it is likely that most people will have developed a cataract or had Cataract Surgery in Dubai to remove it.

When a person is diagnosed with cataract and at the early stages of cataract development, the patient can use stronger lighting and glasses.  Special lens coatings can also reduce glare, at some point, however, on the long run cataract surgery is required to improve a patient's vision.

Cataract surgery is very common and involves the removal of the clouded lens and in most cases replaces it with a clear lens made from plastic, called an intraocular lens (IOL). New developments in IOLs are constantly being researched to perform the surgery, even less complicated and more successful in helping to restore vision in patients of all ages.

Cataract surgery has a very high success rate and most people who have the surgery regain their complete vision. Consult with your Eye Clinic in Dubai to get information about the pros and cons, alternatives and expected results of cataract surgery.

And the most important fact to remember is that to prevent permanent vision loss, regular eye exams and checkups are the solution. Therefore, if you are 65 years, you should have a yearly eye exam, even if you feel you have perfect vision.

Eventhough, cataracts are a natural part of aging, it is important to make sure that you care for your eyes your entire life. Don't forget to make sure to have a dilated exam at least once a year. This will ensure you are examined for the early stages of cataract development and for other types of eye and vision related problems and will also help to maintain your overall health.
