10 Most Common Eye Conditions in Humans


Eye is one of most sensitive organs in our body. Understanding some of the most common eye conditions can assist to prevent and take proper care for cleared vision.

  1. Glaucoma is one of the common eye problems in people that affect the optic nerve causing vision loss. The optic nerve weakens through increased pressure or elevated intra-ocular pressure (IOP). People with family histories are greater at risk. Eye drop prescriptions are offered during primary stage but towards the latter, eye surgery and laser treatments are common. 

  2. Cataracts painless eye condition where the vision starts to become cloudy or hazy. Diabetes, types of medication and ageing are preliminary causes of cataracts. Ophthalmologists perform eye surgery to remove the cloudy lenses and replace with artificial lenses. 

  3. Macular Degeneration is one of the most common eye problems, which develops with age. The nourishment and maintenance of the retina starts to malfunction. Although it rarely causes blindness, treatments include injections to the eye, laser surgery and photodynamic therapy. 

  4. Retinal Detachment occurs when the retina separates its attachments from the underlying tissue within the eye. While retinal break or torn are causes, floating spots or flashes are early symptoms. Eye surgery is an effective treatment although more than one session is required to reattach the retina. 

  5. Pink Eye also refers to as conjunctivitis, occurs when redness of the membranes cover the whites of the eye. Sometime the inflammation spreads to the inner part of the eyelids too. Proper treatment is necessary to as it is contagious eye disease.  

  6. Uveitis is a serious eye problem that demands treatments with the diagnosis. It causes blurred vision, floating spots, eye irritation and sensitive to light. Due causes are infections with a fungus, virus or bacteria. 

  7. Eye Allergies are painful and stressful. Although it is a temporary eye condition, it is also one of the most common eye problems. Cosmetic and medication can play a role in causing eye allergies. Symptoms include itchiness, swollen eyes, burning, redness and watering eyes.   
  8.  Sty is a painful and tender red bumps at the base of eyelashes or inside the eyelids. These eye problems result due to infection of the oil glands in the eyelids. Discomfort while blinking and sensitive to light are common symptoms. 

  9. Keratoconus an eye condition which results when normal pressure inside the eye makes the cornea to bulge outward like a cone. Eye surgery such as corneal transplantation or firm contact lenses may help improve the vision and health of the eye. 

  10. Diabetic Retinopathy is a common eye condition that occurs due to insufficient oxygen to retina. Elevated sugar levels damages the blood vessels of the retina. Eye surgeries on the vitreous or laser surgery are successful treatments.
